Every otaku and their cousin has now joked that those fidget spinner fad toys look like that thing on Kirito's chest (apparently design material offers lore that it's called "The heart of the relic", and it's a breastplate of mysterious metal, taken from the heart of an ancient machine). Among those making this observation is Sword Art Online creator Reki Kawahara.
If you play along with the meta-lore, Sword Art Online light novel illustrator/original character designer abec is a teenage girl (and not the adult man that the guy, also known as BUNBUN apparently really is). So, Kawahara joked that abec, the eternal schoolgirl, was quite the trend-setter here.
He then brought up the anime and Shingo Adachi's changes to the Aincrad equipment for the anime. What made an impression was that the rivets on the shoulder armor of the Pale Rider Jacket (that name caused social media confusion concerning the like-named GGO character), turned into polka-dots for the adaptation.

キリトさんの胸のヤツ、アニメ一期の時に作った設定資料を掘り返したら『防具／胸：ハート・オブ・レリック[The heart of the relic]→不思議な金属でできた胸当て。』と書いてありました。古代機械のコアを引っこ抜いたモノという設定もあった気がするので本当に回るのかも…

アインクラッド編のキリトは装備が変わりまくったので、足立さんや作画スタッフの皆様は大変だっただろうなーと思います。一部で人気？らしい肩に水玉模様…じゃなくてリベットが打ってある防具は《ペイルライダーズ・ジャケット》という名前です
