Plans For New "Mazinger Z" Anime Movie Revealed

At France's Annecy Film Festival, manga/anime legend Go Nagai, Ichinao Nagai (producer at Dynamic Planning, and nephew of Go Nagai) and Yu Kanemaru (producer at Toei Animation) presented plans for the new animated featured based on Nagai's pioneering internally piloted mech series Mazinger Z.

In contrast to the full 3D-CGI Captain Harlock and Saint Seiya porjects, this Mazinger Z will be animated in 3D, but presented in 2D. The classic heroes Koji and Sayaka return for a new story set 10 years after the original TV series.

And speaking of legends, the 69-year-old Ichiro Mizuki, who sang the theme for the original 1972 Mazinger Z anime, returns for the new theme.

The exact date of the release was not reveled yet (but "coming soon"), however the presentation did mention plans to screen the feature in European theaters before it hits Japan.

The presentation also offered a chance for Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro to meet up with Go Nagai.
