The Irregular at Magic High School: The Girl Who Calls the Stars, the highly anticipated anime feature film adaptation of Tsutomu Sato's popular light novel series was released in 59 theaters in Japan on June 17. According to Aniplex's press release, despite its very limited release, it earned an impressive 162,979,360 yen from 106,796 admissions, ranking 5th in its first weekend box office (ticket sales). It became the top-grossing film among the ones released in the weekend and its eye-popping per theater average of 2,762,362 yen was the highest among all films.
The film's first weekend gross was twice more than that of KING OF PRISM -PRIDE the HERO- opened in the previous weekend and made 82 million yen from 56 theaters of almost the same numbers.
On its opening day, the six main voice cast members joined the stage greeting events in Tokyo (Shinjuku
Wald 9), Saitama (Movix Saitama), and Chiba (Movix Kashiwa no Ha). Advance tickets for the events
were all sold out.
