Takahashi Meijin (aka Toshiyuki Takahashi), a former Hudson Soft executive and video game master whose skills made him a legend during the 1980's, is appearing on an upcoming episode of Shikujiri Sensei: Ore Mitai ni Naru na!! ("Failure Teacher: Don't Become Like Me!!"), a TV talk program where celebrities share embarrassing secrets and experiences in the hopes that others will learn from their mistakes.
Although Takahashi's appearance hasn't aired yet, the preview video advertising the show is already bursting with bombshells. In it, Takahashi admits that the role of "Meijin" (meaning "master") was dumped on him by his superiors at Hudson Soft. Prior to that, he was just a normal office worker. He also notes that maintaining the illusion of being a video game master was so stressful that it affected his health, and that he would break out in hives all over his body as a result of working too hard.
Takahashi also admits that it was difficult to appear better than children at video games, but he had a strategy: he would practice the first two minutes of a video game intensely, until his skill at those early stages would appear unbeatable. In the preview video, Takahashi admits that as a result he never cleared further than Stage 1-3 in Super Mario Bros..
The episode of Shikujiri Sensei: Ore Mitai ni Naru na!! featuring Takahashi Meijin will broadcast on TV Asahi at 9:58 PM JST on May 28, 2017.
