The Story Behind the Deflating Pikachu

Yesterday, a video of a very unfortunate Pokémon started making the rounds. A live show featuring 15 dancers in those adorably terrifying Pikachu costumes was well underway. But right in the middle of a rousing performance of "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray, tragedy struck: the group's center began to deflate. And after that... well, things got a little crazy.

A man in a white shirt, followed by half a dozen security guards, mobbed the Pikachu and dragged it offstage, while its fellow dancers continued to shake 'n' shimmy it the best that they can. So what was the deal?

Well, as it turns out, it wasn't the unfortunate dancer who was being tackled -- it was the man in the white shirt.

A video from Chaeli TV shows a better angle of the action. The man in white is a staff member who was rushing to help the dancer offstage, but security is a little too on the ball and thinks that the staffer is attacking the dancer rather than helping them. A slight skirmish ensues, and at some point the staffer seems to have explained the situation because the security guard lets him go and then proceeds to ward off the others who arrive on the scene to take him down.

Then follows an awkward display of all of them apparently trying to look like they were just helping the guy in the first place.

Props to the stage crew and event security for fast reaction times and faster communication, but we really hope that dancer is okay.
