It is confirmed today that a live-action film adaptation of Amu Meguro's shoujo manga honey is now in the works for spring 2018 release. 20-year-old Sho Hirano, who belongs to Kansai Johnny's Jr. as a member of its unit Mr.KING (Mr.King vs Mr.Prince), is cast as the male protagonist Taiga Onise, alongside 18-year-old Yuuna Taira (Sagrada Reset, ReLIFE) as the heroine Nao Kogure.
The slice of life romance manga was serialized in Shueisha's Bessatsu Margaret monthly magazine from 2012 to 2015, then compiled in eight tankobon volumes. It ranked 7th in Nippon Shuppan Hanbai's Recommended Manga Ranking voted by bookstore clerks from all over Japan in 2014. Its English edition was published by VIZ Media under the title Honey So Sweet. The publisher describes the story as below:
HONEY SO SWEET: A charming high school romance between a tender hooligan and an orphaned girl.
Little did Nao Kogure realize back in middle school that when she left an umbrella and a box of bandages
in the rain for injured delinquent Taiga Onise she would meet him again in high school. Nao wants nothing
to do with the gruff and frightening Taiga, but he suddenly presents her with a huge bouquet of flowers
and asks her to date him-with marriage in mind! Is Taiga really so scary, or is he a sweetheart in disguise?
Kouji Shintoku, who most recently worked on a live action film adaptation of another popular shoujo manga,
Miwa Ueda's Peach Girl, which is scheduled to be released on May 20, 2017, helms his second feature film.
Screenplay writer Junpei Yamaoka, who worked with Shintoku for Peach Girl, is teaming up with him again.
