Nintendo Details Switch Online Service, Plans to Launch in 2018

Nintendo offered updated details regarding Switch's online service, which will now officially launch in 2018. In the meantime, online play on Nintendo Switch will be free, and once the trial period ends the subscription service will run you $20 a year.

Services arriving in 2018 include online lobby and voice chat, the latter of which will run through Nintendo's new dedicated smartphone app. There will also be a selection of classic games available to subscribers with added online play.

For now, Nintendo listed Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight, and Dr. Mario as part of the compilation. They confirmed more in-depth plans with Kotaku, saying that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have "ongoing access to a library of classic games" and will be able to "play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription."

As for games beyond NES classics like SMB3, Super NES titles are currently under consideration, but we'll have to wait for more announcements in the future.

A free, limited version of the smart device app will be available to download this summer.

Beyond that, subscribers can also look forward to exclusive Nintendo eShop deals. In addition to the $20 12-month membership, subscriptions will also be available in 3-month chunks for $7.99, with a 1-month membership priced at $3.99.
