Anime followers looking to get some sense of series' commercial success have long used the metric of reported sales as a measurement. Recently, Keijo!!!!!!!! author Daichi Sorayomi spoke out about the inaccuracy of Blu-ray sales figures that media industry monitor Oricon had published for the Blu-ray release of his series' anime adaptation. But, even assuming that the numbers are accurate, are they a useful indication?
Not according to Noboru Takagi, the series composition writer for the Durarara!! anime (also Baccano, KuroBas and episodes of Attach on Titan). Takagi has Tweeted that if you went by sales figures alone you would have thought that the x2 sequel series was a flop. However, thanks to merchandise and international rights, the anime ultimately turned a profit. Noting "I don't know why people judge business success just from looking at disc sales." Light novel author Ryohgo Narita chimed in, noting that this has been increasly the case for the industry in recent years, with momentum picking up in overseas sales.
