KILL LA KILL gets its own DAYS OF FUTURE PAST / AGE OF APOCALYPSE
flash-forward where all the bad guys turn good to fight against a legion
of deadly, flying automatons?
Awesome.
The show seesaws in the quality of its execution, but now that all
these disparate threads are (pun intended) starting to tie together, I’m
having a better time. The Four Horseman have finally abandoned their power
suits to join Nudist Beach and do battle with the newly-sentient, and
newly-evil Goku uniforms they once wore? Ryuko has been revealed to be some
sort of Life Fiber chosen one? These developments seem like they were made up ad hoc, but kudos to Trigger for the cleverness of their improv skills.
(The revelation that Ryuko’s father actually got a make-over and
disguised his identity seems more like a hasty retcon, but whatever…)
Regarding the sexual torture that Raygo subjects
Satsuki to: when this particular… sub-plot showed up during that bathhouse flashback,
it seemed like it was going to be another one of the show’s ill-advised
attempts at titillation. As it’s
developed, I guess it’s fit better within the tropes of heroic fiction in
anime.
I don’t know if we’d classify this show as shonen, but as we’ve been
seeing in HUNTER X HUNTER, when shonen shows set villains up, they don’t
pull any punches about making them the most vile and
reprehensible monsters. Whether it be Hisoka getting sexual gratification
during his fights with Gon, or Raygo molesting Satuski for years, there’s no
question that you, as a viewer, want to see these shitbags get the worst comeuppance imaginable. It's uncomfortable, yes, but... that's the point, isn't it?
Watch, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My
Head” and
decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode.
