Spring Anime to Adapt Classic Sumo Manga

Joining Shonen Jump volleyball Haikyuu and tennis series Baby Steps, the spring anime season will be seeing some less bishonen sports anime with the new inclusion of Notari Matsutarō. The sumo series by veteran sports manga author Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe) ran for 36 volumes starting in 1973.

The series will run at 6:30 Sunday on TV Asahi starting April 6. Its first cast member to be revealed is Yuko Mizutani (Black Jack's Pinoko) as the future wife of the series' extraordinarily strong hero.

It was previously adapted into a 1990 OVA series.
