Japan's top online art community Pixiv recently reached the landmark of 10,000,000 registered users. They're doing a couple of things to celebrate. There's a draw an ema (Shinto plaque) contest with a chance to win merchandise and autographed illustrations. And, they're giving the premium, paying user functionality of sorting illustrations by popularity to all users through the end of the month.
Accessing the most popular illustrations is not an exact science since it relies on how illustrations are tagged. For example a given illustration could be given any combinations of the "Puella Magi Madoka Magica," "Madoka Magica," "Madoka Kaname" and "Madoka" tags.
Looking at "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" tagged pics will not show you ones just tagged "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya."
Still, you can get an interesting survey of the most popular art on Japan's most popular art site.
