Nintendo's Hard-to-Find NES Classic Discontinued in North America

I had a really hard time getting an NES Classic, and by "had a really hard time" I mean "I was never able to get one." If you found yourself in a similar boat, well, Nintendo ain't makin' it any easier. Nintendo announced that they will push out the final shipment of the mini consoles this month, after which the NES Classic will be discontinued in North America.

There are a few reasons beyond Nintendo's typical manufactured scarcity that could be at play here. First, Switch is out now, and Nintendo may want to drive attention back toward its eventual Virtual Console offerings. It also might not help that hackers cracked the Classic wide open, allowing it to play every NES rom available.

The official statement goes like so:

Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability.

We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.

Note that they said "this year," which means the NES Classic could end up becoming Nintendo's very own McRib.

Nintendo of Japan has also temporarily discontinued the Famicom Mini
