New "Detective Conan" Movie Breaks Record with 1.2 Billion Yen Opening Weekend

The ever-popular Detective Conan series continued to ride high this past weekend as its 21st film, The Crimson Love Letter, brought in nearly one million audience members over its first two days in theaters.

The film was shown on 368 screens across Japan on its first weekend, and netted over 1.28 billion yen (around $11.7 million) in its first two days with a turn-out of more than 980,000 audience members. This tops the first weekend record for last year's entry in the series, The Darkest Nightmare, which (while still taking the top spot at the box office) brought in approximatly $11.1 million on its first weekend.

At present, it also sports a 96.1% approval rating, with 93.8% of audiences saying they would recommend it to a friend.

NTV's NEWS ZERO will be running an interview with Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama tomorrow, during which viewers will also get a glimpse of Aoyama's studio.
