Shogakukan confirmed today that a total print run of 53-year-old manga artist Gosho Aoyama's manga works has surpassed 200 million copies worldwide.
He won a prize in Shogakukan's 19th New Face Comic Grand Prix in 1986 with a time slip-themed sci-fi short Chotto Mattete (Wait a Minute), then made his professional manga artist debut with it in the end of the year in the publisher's Weekly Shonen Sunday. He has been working only for the publisher since then. After Magic Kaito (1987-), Yaiba (1988–1993), and Yoban Third (1991-1993), his most successful and internationally famous series Meitantei Conan/Detective Conan (or Case Closed in some countries) started its serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1994, and its latest 92nd volume was released just last Wednesday, April 12. To commemorate the record, three chapters of Magic Kaito will be published in the magazine from this week.
As reported, Shogakukan also announced last month that 59-year-old manga artist Rumiko Takahashi's
manga works, including Urusei Yatsura (1978-1987), Maison Ikkoku (1980-1987), Ranma 1/2 (1987-1996),
Inuyasha (1996-2008), crossed the 200 million mark worldwide as of the release of the latest 35th tankobon
volume of her current serialization series Kyokai no Rinne/RINNE on March 17.
