ONE WEEK FRIENDS #1 -- Special Review

Spring is upon us! Join us as we view new pilots this season, and see where they fit on the highly-scientific Rock-or-Suck Scale… FAIRY TAIL SEASON 2 -- BLACK BULLET -- THE COMIC ARTIST & HIS ASSISTANTS

So this is basically like 50 FIRST DATES in high school, huh? I’ve
always been idly curious about how amnesia works, since it gets used as a dramatic device that always seems so unbelievable. You know, are the parts
of the brain and sections of memory really that compartmentalized? Can you really
remember all this functional knowledge without remembering how you learnt it,
or even who you are?

I doubt this show’s going to delve into such questions. It’s more of a
parable, isn’t it? Using this potentially-farfetched premise to explore how, in
a way, a lot of relationships are constantly hitting the reset button?

Slice-of-life shows are always tough to comment on in this column. The
big, loud events are just easier to pick apart and speculate upon than a quiet
breakfast table conversation that’s scaled back to be even more naturalistic.
Honestly, I was about to dismiss this show for reining the drama back even
further. We’re not talking about a budding romance, just a very tenuously
grasped friendship.

Sure, it makes me think of how, in middle school and high school, you
really do tend to overthink these things - - running a thousand thoughts through your
head over what should’ve been a simple social interaction. That’s a pointed
observation but, by nature, it isn’t the stuff of an ongoing series.

So I was pleasantly surprised by the surprise about the girl’s
condition at the end. Does that make this story a bit more arch? Well, yeah. That’s drama.
Like I said, there’s some good potential here to use dramatic devices to
illustrate how all our friendships and would-be romances are always going
back to square one. Again, as I said, it wouldn’t be a good idea to chronicle
that on an episode-by-episode basis, but maybe one of you lunatics can tell me
how this plays out later on?

Watch "Beginning
of a Friendship
" and decide for yourself.
