Top 10 Selling Games Worldwide in 2013



Welcome to the ‘Top 10′ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.


This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games worldwide in 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in Japan in 2013, and the week before that the top 10 selling games in Europe in 2013.




Looking at the top 10 selling games worldwide in 2013, all 10 games were released in 2013. One of the games was released in March, two in June, four in September, one in October, and two in November.


In 2013 the top 10 games worldwide sold 74.74 million units. The top two selling games, Grand Theft Auto V for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, sold more than 10 million units. The top six games sold more than five million units and the entire top 10 sold more than three million units.


When you break it down by publisher there are four first party titles, three published by Nintendo and one by Sony. Of the third party titles there are Take-Two titles, two Activision titles, and two Electronic Arts titles.


The three Nintendo games sold a combined 17.53 million units or 23.45 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Take-Two titles sold a combined 29.49 million units or 39.46 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Activision titles sold a combined 14.8 million units or 19.80 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Electronic Arts titles sold a combined 8.71 million units or 11.65 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

When you break it down by platform there are four PlayStation 3 titles, three Xbox 360 titles, and three 3DS titles. The four PlayStation 3 sold a combined 32.78 million units or 43.86 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 24.43 million units or 32.69 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three 3DS titles sold a combined 17.53 million units or 23.45 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.


Side note: The 3DS was the top selling platform in 2013 with 14.84 million units sold. The PlayStation 3 sold 8.27 million units, the Xbox 360 sold 5.81 million units, the PlayStation 4 sold 4.41 million units, the Wii U sold 3.23 million units, the Vita sold 3.20 million units, the Xbox One sold 3.07 million units, the PSP sold 2.97 million units, the Wii sold 1.95 million units, and the DS sold 0.82 million units.


The top 12 titles sold more than three million units and the top 21 titles sold more than two million units. The top 73 titles sold more than one million units and the top 156 titles sold more than 500,000 units.


Nintendo sold the most games with 60.96 million games. Electronic Arts sold 60.02 million games, Take-Two sold 52.64 million games, Activision sold 48.72 million games, Ubisoft sold 36.80 million games, Warner Bros. sold 20.21 million games, Sony sold 16.86 million games, and Microsoft sold 16.30 million games.
