Before we get to this anime review, I would like to give a round of applaud to Funimation for recently picking up the license for this anime, as it is one of those anime that everyone showed see.
I also would like to recommend subscribing to their website if you don't have the money to buy this show, but have at least seven dollars to pay for a membership every month.
Now then, Eureka seven is one of thee most amazing romance mecha anime I have had the pleasure of watching on Toonami on April 15, 2006 and ended April 28, 2007.
This anime tells the story of 14 year old boy named Renton Thurston, who dreams of joining the renegade group Gekkostate, led by his idol Holland, a legendary lifter.
One day his dream of joining said group of renegades come to reality when a beautiful girl named Eureka piloting a LFO, called the Nirvash typeZERO falls on top of his house.
After some character interactions between the two that kind of goes somewhere, but not too much and then he joins up with the Gekkostate group, who Eureka is a member of.
Now this may sound like an other shows, but this show as it goes on to become multi-level and deep, not to the point where it becomes confusing, but enough to keep you coming back for more and more and more.
Characters
for this anime we have actually a good amount of both main characters and supporting main characters. because of that I will be only expanding on those characters I deem important.
First on our list is the protagonist Renton.
Renton is a very outgoing, compassionate, and emotional kid. He can be naive at times and has a tendency to drive head first into situations without any plan and or understanding of what he is getting himself into.
At first he is childish, immature and shy when it comes to his feelings for Eureka, but as the show goes on you get to watch as he matures and grows up into this badass LFO pilot and does what takes other man leads multiple seasons to do.
So yeah Renton is differently better than most leads.
Now then our heroine of this series and our Rei Ayanami clone, Eureka.
Eureka is at first fits Rei Ayanami description and personality to a T. She is a quiet and mysterious girl who doesn't show emotion very often, and doesn't smile much either, but all that changed when she met Renton.
Before meeting Renton, she didn't understand human nature or their way of thinking, making her naive.
This is also pretty hilarious because of the fact that she is an adopted mother of three at the start of the series... I'll just let that bit of information sink in for a moment...
Okay moving on, As the story goes on you can start to draw a few more parallels between her and Rei, and there are times when she will get herself into situation, where she start going to things you would expect from Evangelion as her origins and back story comes to light.
Also the reason why i brought Eva up in the first place is because, Eureka seven is Evangelion with a much lighter and romantic tone, Trust me because after a while, they go full Eva on us.
Then afterwards you get to see her slowly start showing actual emotions and threw her interactions with Renton she starts to act more and more like a girl her age should.
The greatest moments in both Renton and Eureka are their interactions and as time goes on you see and feel just how powerful their bond becomes.
Also because she is so innocent, she tends to say and do things that will either cause you to outright laugh your ass of or groan at just how cute she can be at times.
Also I would like to introduce the three aforementioned children as their backstory are is really heart breaking... and the worst part about it is I can't hate the person responsible for their tragic pass.
These children are Maurice · Maeter · Linck and they are as important to the story as their mother.
Honorable Mention to Anemone and Dominic Sorel, who are as important as well.
Now it's time to talk about Holland Novak.
Holland is the leader of Gekkostate and as state before, a badass lift-boarder known all across the world. He is first introduced as this short tempered, lazy, douche, who always seems to be jealous of Renton's ability to get closer to Eureka.
This however changes as the story goes on and he and Renton eventually become like brother. also Holland starts to mature afterwards as he finally finds two more things in his life that are worth protecting and he lets go of his little obsession with Eureka.
The next character we will be talking about is Talho Yuki.
Talho takes the role of the jealous girlfriend/older sister. she was at first the head pilot of Gekkostates ship, until she...(spoilers) and then gave the position to a member of the crew named Moondoggie. (Best name... EVER)
Talho is Holland's lover and has been with him ever since they were both in the military along with Holland's older brother. After some things happened that hurt both of them, they defected from the military and created Gekkostate.
While at first, Talho is shown to be this shallow person who complains about everything and gets drunk to escape her problems.
She really starts to mature after she finally finds what has been missing in her life and her interactions with Renton, Eureka and relationship with Holland grows more and more.
Animation
The animation for this anime is beautiful. it uses a lot of vibrant colors and the action scenes are fluent. Bones out did themselves with this with the detailed backgrounds.
also the animation helps give the already amazing action and dramatic emotion side of Eureka 7.
Music
The soundtrack was composed by Naoki Satō and it is nothing short of a master piece. there is a great mixture of upbeat, sad, tense and epic tracks that match well with the scenes they are played in.
also I would like to give a special mention of my favorite song from that track, which is also the second opening Shounen Heart by Home Made Kazoku.
Also the forth opening Sakura by Nirgilis.
Final Score
In conclusion Eureka seven is an amazing well put together story with great character, a beautiful love story, amazing animation and overall a must watch.
it had no fan-service and it wasn't rushed.
This anime gets four stars and a recommendation to Buy it.
at the time of this review it is available on Funimation's website, but since they have yet to put all of the episode up, you can either buy it from funimation shop or on Rightstuf.com.
so with that I will see you in my next review. So Take It Easy.
