Namco Bandai is getting ready to bring back an arcade classic with the return of Wonder Momo. Originally release in arcades in 1987, the beat 'em up series is making a comeback with a new game by WayForward (Double Dragon: Neon, Contra 4, Ducktales Remastered), apparel, a hardcover graphic novel from Udon, and a web-based anime series that will stream on Crunchyroll.
The anime is being animated by Graphinica, Inc. (Hellsing Ultimate)), with Yutaka Kagawa (Hajime Ningen Gon, Rainbow Samurai) directing a script by Ayumi Inabe, based on an original story by Erik Ko and Jim Zub. The series will be made up of five shorts that clock in at five minutes each, and will stream every Thursday.
Here's the synopsis:
One day, a group of aliens planning to take over the Earth invade Tokyo. Momoko, who aspires to be an idol, gets involved in the fight in an unexpected form. Warudemon, king of the alien empire, uses various tactics to hunt down Momoko and the people around her. Momoko has decided to stand up to the Warudemon plain and simple.
Yuka Fujiwara is playing the role of Momoko/Wonder Momo and Misaki Komatsu is playing Akiho/Amazona. Together the duo will also be performing some of the anime and game themes as FUJIKOMATUNE.
WayForward's game will be a beat 'em up in the spirit of the '80s original, and is due out on PC and Android devices this spring. James Montagna is directing the game, based on an original story and script by Montagna, Erik Ko, and Jim Zub. WayForward's resident composer Jake Kaufman will handle the tunes, with Alex Culang providing additional music.
Wonder Momo was most recently seen when Namco Bandai first reintroduced the heroine in 2012 as a ShiftyLook webcomic. Udon's hardcover graphic novel collection is set to arrive this April.
