According to ACCS's press release posted yesterday, Fukuoka Prefectural Police has announced that its Cyber Crime Division and Nishi Station arrested a 47-year-old unemployed man from Suginami Ward, Tokyo, on suspicion of copyright infringement (an infringement of public transmission rights) on February 7 and referred the case to the Fukuoka District Court the next day. The suspect is accused of using the file-sharing software Share to upload the 37th volume of Kentaro Miura's popular manga Berserk to the internet without the copyright holders' permission on April 8, 2013, 10 days after the official release day in Japan.
The suspect, who was sued by Hakusensha and the manga creator, has already confessed to his crime and said, "I thought I also had to upload the files, not just downloading them." The police seized the suspect's PCs and hard disks from his house on the arrest day and thinks about 1,000 manga files
had been uploaded by him illegally.
