Otakudom Trumps Everything in "Anime-Gataris"

The main staff and cast have been announced for Anime-Gataris, an upcoming original TV anime about a trio of girls trying to keep their high school anime club afloat despite the resistance of the student council...and the imminent destruction of the world?

The main staff for Anime-Gataris includes:

  • Original work, planning, production: DMM.futureworks, W-Toon Studio
  • Director: Kenshirō Morii
  • Chief animation director, character design: so-shi
  • Series composition: Matsutaka Hirota
  • Animation production: Wao World
  • Production: Sakeneko Private High School Anime Research Club, JY Animation

The cast of Anime-Gataris includes:

Kaede Hondo as Minoa Asagaya, a freshman student at Sakeneko Private High School. Despite being a founding member of the anime research club, Minoa doesn't yet have a favorite anime, and she's easily swayed by the opinions of the other members. She's a bit clumsy and has a straightforward personality, and she's ready to throw herself full-force into anime fandom.

Sayaka Senbongi as Arisu Kamiigusa, Minoa's classmate. Arisu is the daughter of the president of a major trading company, but she is lonely despite her wealth and just wants someone to talk to about anime. Arisu thinks that any problem can be solved with money.

Hisako Tojo as Miko Kouenji, Minoa's classmate. Miko is shy and unassuming, and she loves light novels and light novel anime adaptations, especially ones with "chuunibyou" protagonists. Miko secretly hopes to become a light novel author, and she posts her stories to the Internet as she works toward this goal.

Rie Takahashi will also be playing an as-yet-unnamed role, perhaps voicing the suspiciously human-like gray cat in the key visual above.

The plot of Anime-Gataris revolves around Minoa Asagaya, a freshman student at Sakeneko Private High School. Although she's just a novice when it comes to anime, Minoa is recruited into the school's anime research club and quickly acquires a taste for animation. In fact, Minoa and her friends are soon so obsessed with anime that they'll talk about it anywhere (in Akihabara, in "sacred sites", in the hot springs, etc.), despite the protestations of the student council and the possible imminent destruction of the world.

An official website and Twitter feed (@animegataris) were also published for Anime-Gataris. The series will debut on Japanese television in the Fall season of 2017.
