Earlier this month, the live-action adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga was featured in a 50-second trailer, introducing the Elric Brothers in their childhood, and the grown-up Ed with CGI-generated Al in alchemy battles. Warner Bros. Japan has now doubled down, returning to this with an English version of the promo.
Director Fumihiko Sori (Ping Pong, Vexille, Ashita no Joe) recently commented on the film's technical aspect. "It is true that Hollywood has gone far ahead of Japan. But we have gathered enough technology to reach the level that we have never been, if we jump fly high. That allows me to try this film now. I want to reach out where no one has gone before with this film. But I understand technology should be used only to support the story. For a film, the most important thing is its story. I think it is wonderful if technology can hold the story tightly."
23-year-old Ryosuke Yamada, a member of Japanese idol group Hey! Say! JUMP, is cast as the protagonist Edward Elric, while 24-year-old fashion model/actress Tsubasa Honda plays the main heroine Winry Rockbell. The voice cast for Al, previously voiced by Rie Kugimiya in the anime series, has not yet been revealed.
The film's three-month shooting was already finished in Japan in August 2016, and it is set for a release on December 1, 2017.
