Japan Box Office: "Detective Conan" 21st Film Beats "Crayon Shin-chan" Overwhelmingly

According to the latest box office report in Japan, the 21st Detective Conan feature film Karakurenai no Love Letter/Crimson Love Letter earned an impressive 1,286,928,000 yen on 987,568 admissions in its opening weekend of April 15-16, which was four times more than the 25th Crayon Shin-chan film, Invasion!! Alien Shiriri in the 2nd place made in its debut weekend.

Crimson Love Letter's first week performances were 106.4% (gross) and 105.7% (ticket sales) of those of last year's 20th film Junkoku no Nightmare/The Darkest Nightmare, and were the highest records in the 20-year-old anime film series. If the momentum continues, the 21st film is expected to be the most successful Conan film in history, surpassing The Darkest Nightmare's 6.33 billion yen.

Crayon Shin-chan: Invasion!! Alien Shiriri made 330 million yen in its opening weekend, which was a 18.6% down from the previous film Fast Asleep! Dreaming World Big Assault! in April 2016. It seems a bit

difficult for the film franchise's 25th anniversary title to cross the 2 billion yen mark in its total domestic

run. Meanwhile, the live-action film adaptation of Masamune Shirow's cyberpunk manga series Kokaku

Kidoutai/Ghost in The Shell dropped to 5th from last weekend's 3rd. And the live-action film adaptation

of Yayoiso's science fantasy drama seinen web manga ReLIFE ranked a so-so 8th in its opening weekend.
