Fans of old-school fantasy anime will soon have something to crow about, because Funimation has announced that they've rescued the license for the Record of Lodoss War OAVs and the Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight TV series. Both are based on a series of Dungeons & Dragons-inspired fantasy novels written by Ryo Mizuno.
Funimation describes Record of Lodoss War as follows:
"Born to a banished knight in a land torn by war, young Parn and a ragtag team of adventurers set out to restore peace to the island of Lodoss. But the path is not an easy one. Presiding over all is the Grey Witch, whose bent for neutrality gives the heroes no peace. Meanwhile, in the cursed land of Marmo, an evil sorcerer seeks the destructive power of an ancient goddess. The ensuing battles cost the lives of many a friend and foe, until a brave new generation of heroes rises to face the sinister enemies once and for all."
Funimation will release both the OAVs and the TV series in a single, combined package. The OAVs will be released on Bluray and DVD, while the TV series will be released on DVD only. The set will be released in North America on July 18, 2017. The suggested retail price has not yet been announced.
Record of Lodoss War was previously released on VHS and DVD by Central Park Media. In 2010, Media Blasters announced that they had picked up the license for Record of Lodoss War, but this release never materialized and was officially canceled in 2012.
