Top 10 Selling Games in the USA in 2013



Welcome to the ‘Top 10′ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.


This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in the USA in 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Wii games in 2013, and the week before that the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games in 2013.




Looking at the top 10 selling games in the USA in 2013, all 10 games were released in 2013. Two of the games were released in June, one in August, two in September, two in October, and three in November.


In 2013 the top 10 games in the USA sold 30.55 million units. The top two selling games, Grand Theft Auto V for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, sold more than five million units. The top five games sold more than two million units and the entire top 10 sold more than one million units.


When you break it down by publisher there are three first party titles, published by Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, and seven third party titles. Of the first party titles there is one title published by each of the game console manufacturers. Of the third party titles there are three published by Take-Two, two by Activision, and two by Electronic Arts.


The three Take-Two games sold a combined 13.55 million units or 44.35 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Activision titles sold 7.44 million units, or 24.35 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Electronic Arts titles sold 3.05 million units, or 9.98 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

There are two games, Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Ghosts, which have two versions in the top 10. Both games are for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The two version of Grand Theft Auto V sold a combined 12.17 million units. The two versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts sold a combined 7.44 million units.


When you break it down by platform there are six Xbox 360 titles, three PlayStation 3 titles and one 3DS title. The six Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 18.06 million units or 59.12 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three PlayStation 3 titles sold a combined 9.41 million units or 30.80 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one 3DS title, Pokémon X/Y, sold 3.08 million units or 10.08 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.


Side note: The 3DS was the top selling platform in the USA in 2013 with 4.04 million units sold. The Xbox 360 sold 3.19 million units, the PlayStation 3 sold 2.23 million units, the PlayStation 4 sold 2.08 million units, the Xbox One sold 1.93 million units, the Wii U sold 1.23 million units, the Wii sold 773,488 units, the DS sold 554,849 units, the Vita sold 509,085 units, and the PSP sold 128,378.


The top 17 titles sold more than one million units and the top 64 titles sold more than 500,000 units. The top 167 titles sold more than 200,000 units.


Take-Two sold the most games with 24.53 million games. Activision sold 24.17 million games, Nintendo sold 23.63 million games, Electronic Arts sold 22.62 million games, Ubisoft sold 15.64 million games, Warner Bros. sold 10.24 million games, Microsoft sold 8.54 million games, and Sony sold 6.99 million games.
