When Tufts Professor of Japanese Literature Susan J. Napier spoke to Hayao Miyazaki earlier in the year, the director mentioned that he'd spent the New Years holiday reading The Tales of Hoffman, being fascinated with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet, and the original The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Now, the Studio Ghibli museum in Mitaka, Tokyo is hosting a special exhibit on the subject.
Replacing the "The Lens at Work in The Ghibli Forest," the new The Nutcracker and the Mouse King exhibit examines the attraction of the story, especially to young girls, as well as its different visual interpretations. In addition to panels by Miyazaki himself, the exhibit will have a recreation of the story in miniatures as well as a look at Alison Jay's children's book illustrations.
The exhibit runs May 2014-May 2015.
