10 Million Yen Prize Money for the 1st National Manga Grand Prix Winner



Tsutaya, one of the largest CD/DVD rental and bookstore chain in Japan, is now holding the 1st National Manga Grand Prix, a prize contest for a new manga and story, in cooperation with Earth Star Entertainment which publishes a monthly manga magazine Comic Earth Star. The first-prize winner of the manga category will receive 10 million yen prize money (about US$100,000). The winning manga is guaranteed to be serialized in Comic Earth Star, to release manga tankobons by Earth Star Comic, and to get a TV anime adaptation by Earth Star Entertainment. All of the Tsutaya stores across Japan will also promote the manga heavily then. The first-prize winner of the story category will receive 5 million yen prize money (about US$50,000).



These are the highest prize money for manga contests held in Japan. The second highest is 5 million yen for Shogakukan’s New Face Comic Grand Prix and Shueisha’s Gold Tiara Award. The reception of


the application has already stated since April 1 and the deadline is September 30. The winners will be


announced on the contest’s official site in the end of October.

Manga Category


You must send:


– the final draft consisting of the first three episodes (per 16 to 100 pages, B4-size: 270mm x 180mm)


– the synopsis for the tankobon first volume (about 250 pages)


– the plot from the second volume to the end


– the characters’ image illustrations (pen-and-ink or pencil sketches)



Story Category


You must send:


– the final storyboards consisting of the first three episodes (per 16 to 100 pages)


– the synopsis for the tankobon first volume (about 250 pages)


– the plot from the second volume to the end


– the characters’ image illustrations



The Prize Money




Manga Category


The 1st winner – 10 million yen


The 2nd winner- 3 million yen


Special prize – 300,000 yen


Encouragement prize – 100,000 yen



Story Category


The 1st winner – 5 million yen


The 2nd winner- 1.5 million yen


Special prize – 150,000 yen


Encouragement prize – 50,000 yen
