Welcome to the ‘Top 10′ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling 3DS games (2014 update). Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Wii games (2014 update), and the week before that the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games (2014 update).
Looking at the top 10 selling 3DS games (2014 update), five games were released in 2011, two in 2012, and three in 2013.
The top 10 selling Wii games have sold 60.82 million units. The top selling game, , sold more than 10 million units. The top five titles sold more than five million units and the entire top 10 sold more than two million units.
When you break it down by publisher there are eight first party titles and two third party titles. The third party titles, Monster Hunter 4 and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, were both published by Capcom.
The eight Nintendo titles sold a combined 54.89 million units or 90.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Capcom title sold 5.93 million units or 9.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
When you break it down by franchise there are two Mario titles and two Monster Hunter titles. The two Mario titles, Super Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros. 2, sold a combined 17.02 million units. The two Monster Hunter titles sold a combined 5.93.
Side note: There have been 2.64 million 3DS’s sold in 2014 through June 7. The 3DS has sold 43.20 million units lifetime. There have also been 13.58 million games sold for the 3DS in 2014. There have been 136.53 million games sold lifetime for the 3DS.
Broken down by publisher Nintendo has sold the most games for the 3DS with 78.62 million games sold. Capcom has sold 8.73 million games, Namco Bandai 7.59 million games, Square Enix 5.81 million games, Level 5 4.43 million games, and Sega 4.21 million games.
