Good Smile Company to Open Its Own Factory in Tottori, Japan

On June 26, Tottori Prefecture and Kurayoshi-city held the signing ceremony with Good Smile Company, one of the most famous character figure companies in Japan, to set up a new factory of the company in this fall. While most of the company's popular products are featuring Japanese anime/game characters, their production base is currently located in Shanghai, China. Due to rising labor costs and avoiding exchange rate risks, the company has decided to have its own factory in Japan. Tottori Prefecture is known for its "Manga Kingdom" policy to promote Japanese pop culture.

The 3,300 square-meter factory in the West Kurayoshi Industrial Park is scheduled to start its operation in October, then is planned to produce 40,000 Nendoroid figures a month and employ 100 workers in three years. The company receives a subsidy of 300 million yen (about US$2.96 million) from the prefecture and the city for the initial cost and the rental expense for the factory. In terms of employment,

the prefecture and the city also provide 1.3 million yen (US$12,800) to the company for hiring one full-time worker.
