BLEACH Ch. 584 Review

Ichigo's threat to the Vandenreich plot has made him the war's most valuable target. He now finds himself surrounded on all sides by an enemy who wishes to find glory in his defeat.

The Good

I've been incredibly confused why Kubo opened up Ichigo's reintroduction by having him facing off with some obviously weaker female characters. It sort of contradicts his heroic image. Having Bazz-B and a cast of other Stern Ritters stepping in feels a little more appropriate. We've seen Bazz-B cause some serious damage in previous fights. He's been built up, and the increasing numbers feels more like a threat.

However, I also don't see Kubo wasting so many of these Vandenreich characters in this one brawl. I just know something will happen to free Ichigo from being the central target of the hunt. The climax of the chapter gives a glimpse of that.

The Bad

I know Ichigo is the hero of this series, but this is a touch ridiculous. This chapter opens right where the previous one left off. He's pulled out what I suspect is a powerful new attack. So then why is he warning his target to dodge it? Why waste so much energy in a war on an attack that you never intended to hit its target? Is he really trying to end this fight by scaring them off?

Who knows? Maybe he was just using this fight as an excuse to test out a new move. This all more seems like Kubo's way of keeping the hero sympathetic since he's currently fighting a bunch of girls. Admittedly, that could make a character look bad, but is him taking them so lightly any better? It's kind of condescending. I thought the point of the previous chapters was to show them as evil, so we wouldn't feel so bad about their defeat.

Verdict 3/5

This was kind of a so-so chapter that has some nice artwork in it. Yet nothing is moving forward. Ichigo is only at a standstill because he's letting this fight drag on. Isn't is so strange that things have taken sort of a downward trajectory with the protagonist's return? I'm seriously hoping that things will pick up in next week's chapter.
