Sports Hochi reports today on May 5 that a live-action TV drama adaptation of Kazuhiko Shimamoto’s semibiographical manga Aoi Honou is in the works. The manga was first randomly serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Young Sunday between 2007 and 2008. After the magazine stopped its publication in 2008, it moved to a new magazine Monthly Shonen Sunday (aka: Get the Sun/Gessan). Now 11 tankobon volumes are available.
The manga focuses on a young art university student Moyuru Honou, who has a dream of becoming a professional manga artist. The story is based on Shimamoto’s real student life at Osaka University of Arts in the early 1980s with the future staff of Daicon Film and Gainax, such as Hideaki Anno (Evangelion), Hiroyuki Yamaga (The Wings of Honneamise), and Toshio Okada (the first president of Gainax).
24-year-old actor Yuya Yagira, who won the Best Actor Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival with the
Hirokazu Koreeda-directed film Nobody Knows, plays Moyuru Honou in his first comedy drama. The director
Yuichi Fukuda previously wrote a script for the live-action adaptation film of Shimamoto’s popular baseball-
themed manga Gyakkyou Nine in 2005. The TV drama will be broadcasted in TV Tokyo’s midnight drama
block “Drama 24″ soon.
