Ritsuo Takano, the mayor of Fuchu-city in Tokyo, held a press conference to reveal the design for the motorcycle number plate featuring Baki Hanma, the protagonist of Keisuke Itagaki’s long-running action/martial arts manga series Baki, at the mayor press room in the city hall yesterday on May 28. Itagaki has been a resident of the city and the 600-limited plate is produced in commemoration of the city’s 60th anniversary with his cooperation. It will be given to the riders of motor cycles whose engine displacement is less than 50 cubic centimeters in the city from July 28.
Car/motorcycle number plates featuring famous anime/manga characters have been a trend in Japan recently. In December 2013, Kotoura-cho in Tottori Prefecture issued plates for motorcycles and light motor vehicles using Haruka Kotoura from Enokizu’s manga series Kotoura-san. Then Nerima-ward in Tokyo featured Maetel from Leiji Matsumoto’s Galaxy Express 999 and Sakura-city in Chiba Prefecture
used Arsène Lupin III from Monkey Punch’s Lupin the Third.
