Ubisoft is currently advising users that one of their sites has been hit by hackers, and that you should change password on all Ubisoft sites and services. According to Ubisoft, the hackers were able to access data including usernames, email addresses, and encrypted passwords. However, Ubisoft clarified that, “No personal payment information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning your credit/debit card information was not at risk from this intrusion.”
While this does not directly affect Uplay, Ubisoft’s online gaming portal, Ubisoft wrote, “The attack did not originate via any Uplay services, the intrusion targeted some of our online systems.” And the attack will not affect any game services, including Watch Dogs: “The uptime and stability of our games’ online services were not affected by this intrusion.”
If you use the same password for multiple sites (which you really, really shouldn’t), this does put those other accounts at risk. You can change your Ubisoft password here.
How did it happen? Ubisoft explained, “Credentials were stolen and used to illegally access our online network. We can’t go into specifics for security reasons.”
Hackers also targeted Ubisoft around this time last year. Though, ironically, the company was most likely a target today because of today’s release of the open-world game about hacking, Watch Dogs.
