In the most recent Japanese weekend movie ranking (May 24-25), Frozen still held the first place for the five-straight week, 10 times in total since its opening on March 14. It has earned 19,844,395,900 yen (about US$194,700,000) with 15,588,545 tickets sales, and has become the 4th most grossing film in the Japanese box office history, easily surpassing the two highly acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki films: previous 5th Princess Mononoke (1997/19.3 billion yen) and 4th Howl’s Moving Castle (2004/19.6 billion).
It will definitely reach the 20 billion yen mark and will catch the 3rd grossing film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2011/20.3 billion) by the end of this week. Then the last two targets for Frozen are James Cameron’s Titanic (1998/26.2 billion) in 2nd and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (2001/30.4 billion) in 1st. Will Frozen reach the untouchable records?
