Fanart Friday returns, burned to a blackened crisp. Last week, we stayed grounded with EARTH-themed characters, but this week we’re heating things up with a look at FIRE! An element that perfectly symbolizes the balance between life and death, between comfort and pain, fire is one of the go-to elements for a lot of characters in a lot of media. In fact, there were so many requests that I wasn’t able to get everyone’s–sorry about that!
Like Earth, Fire is an element that shows up in almost every classical elemental system, and is usually (appropriately) associated with hot-headed or short-tempered characters. You’re gonna see a lot of short-fused, fight-happy characters this time around–let’s get started!
DISCLAIMER: None of the art presented is the property of myself or Crunchyroll. All characters and series are tm and © their respective creators and corporate owners. Last week’s installment had like three Earthbenders, so I’m only including one Firebender this time around. Zuko started off as a pretty stock villain in Avatar: The Last Airbender (or The Legend of Aang if you want), but ended up becoming someone much more developed and interesting as time went on.
I’m kinda surprised there wasn’t a lot of fanart for A Certain Magical Index‘s Stiyl Magnus–dude’s a total bishie and looks pretty badass, so I thought he’d have a bigger fandom. Guess not!

For all those times in Soul Eater when cutting something in half or shooting it in the face wasn’t an option, Jacqueline Lantern brought the pain with her flames.

In fact, it’s kinda nice seeing secondary characters get flame powers instead of main characters (more on those later)–Tasuki is still my favorite member of the Suzaku Seven, and I’m kinda surprised he didn’t just try lighting Nakago’s hair on fire. With the sheer amount of product in that dude’s coif, he’d go up like a Roman candle.

SPOILER ALERT if you’re seeing JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure for the first time here on Crunchyroll–Avdol is kind of the team’s crash test dummy. He always tends to walk into a room, gets, I dunno, shot, and then everybody goes OH MY GOD THIS GUY’S POWER INVOLVES GUNS WE WILL AVENGE YOU AVDOL while he’s lying on the ground gasping and dying (and then it happens again in the next part of the story). No, seriously–JoJo fans, count how many times it happens in Stardust Crusaders.

There may be a million Fire-types in Pokemon (and my friend was asking me to include Ponyta), but you really only need one–the original, and Red’s main–Charizard!

Hey, I thought Psyren‘s Frederica had bear hats? Whatever animal hat she’s wearing, she’s still a fearsome pyrokinetic specialist.

So after last week’s whole thing with D-FRAG‘s Chitose and some very unhelpful explanations (“Hey guys, can you explain to me why she’s an Earth type?” “Because she’s an Earth type!” THANKS), I did some reading on this myself, and… yeah. I found out that these random-ass people assigned elemental types to themselves. THAT’S IT. You guys better be thankful for hanachan–who helps every week on Fanart Friday–because I almost said “OKAY, THAT’S DUMB, NO MORE D-FRAG FOR THE REST OF THE MONTH,” despite all the requests for Roka Shibasaki here. *grumble*

See, Recca and his lunatic half-brother Kurei are what I think of for a Fire-type character: they actually set people on fire. Although there are a few points in Flame of Recca where Recca does something a lot more sadistic and chucks firecrackers at people while they’re in pits.

Working Support, I’m getting a lot of questions about where episodes 13-48 of Fairy Tail are. Don’t worry, guys, they’ll be added at a later date, and then you can watch Natsu Dragneel get motion sick all you want.

My favorite thing about One Piece‘s Portgas D. Ace is his tattoo. Who the hell misspells their own name? Then again, I can tell you for a certainty that a lot of people misspell “Gmail.” Don’t ask how.

Another one for W.I.T.C.H.! So here’s my question: how do you pronounce Taranee?

REBORN‘s Tsuna literally has to fight fire with fire to lead the Vongola family. This is when you show up to a fight with a big bucket full of sand.
Adventure Time‘s Flame Princess is adorable, but I like how the show handled a pretty painful break-up with the same awkwardness that teenagers have, but a strange amount of maturity and intelligence. You should already know this, but Adventure Time is a show that’s much more than it appears to be.

I don’t give a good god damn if this is a spoiler from near the end of Fullmetal Alchemist, this is one of the most badass pieces of art from one of the most badass scenes in that entire series! EFF YEAH, ROY MUSTANG + RIZA HAWKEYE FTMFW

Mario’s Fire Flower abilities have waxed and waned over the years in terms of how useful they are, but Bowser–King of the Koopas–has never been anything but a massive, terrifying threat. He’s a living flamethrower who has absolutely no idea how to stay down!

When I really put some thought into it, “fire” is just a cruel ability to have. In Saint Seiya, Seiya punches people with a million meteors, Shiryu hits them with water and a fist, Hyoga freezes you solid, and Shun whips you with chains like he’s Rihanna, but Phoenix Ikki gets inside your brain and makes you think he’s immolating you with blazing flames. Or he just, y’know… lights you on fire the old-fashioned way. That’s really not cool, Ikki.

At least Witch Craft Works‘ Kagari is cool, and doesn’t go that overboard when it comes to setting people alight. It’s usually just the Tower Witches who get the brunt of her raw power–everybody else just gets their lunches blackened.
by RAMた
A reader last week got it right–Tiger & Bunny‘s Fire Emblem (aka Nathan Seymour) is flaming in both senses of the word! He’s like a black George Takei, who kills with the sheer power of his fabulous flames, who also happens to be a really nice, level-headed guy at the same time… at least, until you piss him off, then your ass is char-broiled.

This is–at least to me–one of the coolest Sailor Mars pictures I’ve ever seen. Who’s excited for Sailor Moon Crystal? I’m just happy it’s not gonna be a simple filler-less HD cleanup like Dragon Ball Kai!
Naruto‘s Uchiha clan have just one–well, okay, three representatives in the series right now, but every one of them specialized in fire techniques, from staple Goukakyuu no Jutsu to the black flames of Itachi’s terrifying Amaterasu.

From his very first appearance in Bleach, I knew that Captain-Commander Yamamoto wasn’t someone to be trifled with. And then he activates his zanpakutou and turns an entire square mile into ash, and it was nice to see that my healthy fear wasn’t unfounded. Gotei 13 ain’t nothin’ to f**k with.

Seeing Alibaba here reminds me–the second season of Magi is done! I’m gonna end up doing exactly what I did with the first season: watch the first few episodes as they came out, then just shotgun the whole series all in one go later on down the line!
by 香白白
Tasuki’s cool, but Arata the Legend‘s Kannagi looks like kind of a dick. If it came to blows between him and Tasuki, which of Yuu Watase’s bishounen burninators would come out on top?
by ユキフネ
Of course Dhalsim’s wife Sari makes an amazing curry! But here’s what I wonder: if Dhalsim can handle actual flames coming out of his mouth, how much spice can he handle on his food? Can he even eat stuff like butter chicken or palak paneer? And how does his boy Datta handle it?

Fine, fine… if D-FRAG makes it in, so does the Great Cornholio. FIRE! FIIIIRE!!
And that’s everything for this week! Who are your favorite fire elementals? There’s no way I could have included everybody–sound off in the comments and let us know!
Like I say every week, your art is always welcome here on Fanart Friday. Just PM me a link to your work, and I’ll be sure to include it in a future installment! Here are the next three themes for Fanart Friday:
-Next week, on MAY 16th, we’re huffing and puffing and blowing this column down with WIND! Even though it’s not quite as common as fire, you’ll still see plenty of wind elementals flying around. Who do you think should show up next week? THIS IS THE ONLY THEME I’M TAKING REQUESTS FOR THIS WEEK!
-Then, on MAY 23rd, we’re cooling down with WATER! To answer a question from a reader, yes, ice and mist abilities are included in this installment!
-On MAY 30th, we wrap up our month-long trip through the elements with METAL!
Thanks again for coming by to check out Fanart Friday! Have a great weekend, and I hope you drop by again next week!
