"Laughing Under the Clouds" Manga Spin-Off Series Gets Anime Film Adaptation

It is officially confirmed today that an anime feature film adaptation of Donten ni Warau -Gaiden-, a three-volume spin-off series of Kemuri Karakara's fantasy action manga Donten ni Warau/Laughing Under the Clouds, is now in the works for a release in the winter of 2017. Its last third tankobon volume and the sixth volume of the prequel series Rengoku ni Warau/Laughing in Purgatory are released in Japan simultaneously today, March 14.

The manga's original series Donten ni Warau was previously adapted into a 12-episode TV anime series by Doga Kobo, which was aired from October to December 2014. But instead of Doga Kobo, WIT STUDIO (Attack on Titan, The Ancient Magus' Bride) newly works on anime production of the film. No production staff members are confirmed.

It is also confirmed that a stage play adaptation of Rengoku ni Warau written/directed by Daisuke Nishida

(Sengoku Basara, Joker Game) will be performed in Tokyo and Osaka in this August. 31-year-old Hiroki

Suzuki (Yasutomo Arakita in Yowamushi Pedal) is cast as the protagonist Sakichi Ishida.

In addition, Katsuyuki Motohiro (Odoru Daisousasen/Bayside Shakedown)-directed live-action film based

on the original series Donten ni Warau is already set for a release in 2018.
