Top 10 Selling Games in 2014 (Through July 19) – Watch Dogs, Mario Kart 8, Titanfall



Welcome to the ‘Top 10′ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.


This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in 2014 (Through July 19). Last week we looked at the top 10 selling PlayStation 4 games (2014 update), and the week before that the top 10 selling Xbox One (2014 update).




Looking at the top 10 selling games in 2014 (Through July 19), five games were released in 2013 and five were released in 2014.


The top 10 selling games in 2014 (Through July 19) have sold 16.13 million units. The top two selling games sold more than two million units. The entire top 10 has sold more than one million units.


When you break it down by publisher there are four first party titles and six third party titles. When it comes to first party titles there are two Nintendo titles, one Microsoft title and one Sony title. When it comes to third party titles there are two Activision titles, one Ubisoft title, one Electronic Arts title, one Level 5 title, and Take-Two title.


The two Nintendo titles sold a combined 3.67 million units or 22.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Activision titles sold 2.20 million units or 13.64 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

When you break you look at the top 10 selling games in 2014 (Through July 19) as a graph, it shows how games released early in a console generation have a high attach ratio. The top three selling games in 2014 to date are all for the eighth generation home consoles. Each of the games have an attach ratio of more than 25 percent. In total there are six games for the eighth generation and four for the seventh generation.


When you take a look at the top 10 games by platform there are eight games for home consoles and two for handhelds. There are four games for PlayStation consoles, two for the PlayStation 4 and two for the PlayStation 3. There are three games for Xbox consoles, one for the Xbox One and two for the Xbox 360. There are three games for Nintendo platforms, two for the 3DS and one for the Wii U.


Side note: The PlayStation 4 is the top selling consoles in 2014 to date with sales of 4.33 million units. There have been 1.89 million Xbox One’s sold, 1.81 million PlayStation 3′s sold, 1.32 million Wii U’s sold, 1.22 million Xbox 360′s sold, and 0.31 million Wii’s sold.


The 3DS is by far the bestselling handheld in 2014 with sales of 3.55 million units. The PlayStation Vita has sold 1.24 million units and the PSP 0.39 million units.


While the eighth generation might have the top selling platforms so far in 2014, it is the seventh generation that has sold the most games. There have been 36.93 million games sold for the PlayStation 3, 27.55 million games sold for the Xbox 360, 14.21 million games sold for the PlayStation 4, 9.69 million games sold for the Wii, and 7.82 million games sold for the Wii U.


The 3DS is again the top handheld with 17.90 million games sold. There have been 6.98 million games sold for the DS, 5.50 million games sold for the Vita, and 2.37 million for the PSP.
