Sendai-city in Miyagi Prefecture and Volleyball Association of the city appointed Hinagarasu, a popular mascot character in Haruichi Furudate's volleyball-themed manga Haikyu!! and its TV anime adaptation, as a Sendai Volleyball Goodwill Ambassador on August 28.
The position is established to support promotion of the sport and the city for the first time. As the fans know well, the story of the Haikyu!! series is set in Sendai and the protagonist Shoyo Hinata goes to a fictional Karasuno High School in the city. Hinagarasu, who received the letter of appointment from the mayor of the city Emiko Okuyama at the city hall yesterday, will serve as the ambassador for the next two years till August 27, 2016. The character plans to visit various sport events in the region and Haikyu!! PR events across Japan.
