Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 (Xbox 360, PS3); Friday, August 8, 2014 (PC)

From our Review: Ultra Street Fighter 4 takes an already incredible, content-rich fighting game, and builds upon it in ways that fighting enthusiasts can get lost in and casual fans can enjoy. Every addition and refinement, both big and small, works. The new characters feel like they’ve been here all along, and the rebalancing gives old characters a fresh lease on life, making Ultra a must-have for anyone who’s enjoyed any version of Street Fighter 4.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 (PS4, PS3, Vita)

From our Review: My heart aches for so many different reasons every time I solve a puzzle in The Swapper. The first time I softened what would’ve been a fatal fall by creating a copy of myself at the last minute and swapping my consciousness into it was absolutely revelatory. Watching the body that I’d inhabited just moments before crumble onto a lifeless heap as it hit the ground gave me pause in a way that few games ever do. Were these copies simply lifeless tools with the sole purpose of helping me overcome a challenge? Or was I actively murdering countless versions of myself in cold blood? Or is it suicide?

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014

From our Review: Divergent is a rip-off. That’s not a knock at Veronica Roth’s a young adult fiction series, which may wear influences on its sleeve while combining Myers Briggs personality testing with dystopian sci-fi adventuring. Knowledge of the Roth’s novels is not (and shouldn’t be) a requirement. They stand alone.

The first book’s big budget adaptation is another story. Cobbled together by director Neil Burger (Limitless) and writers Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones), Divergent is the eighth xerox of a shuffled stack of random pages ripped from Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games screenplays. There isn’t an inspired design, dash of creative world-building or original emotional beat in the 139 minutes of this tedious trilogy-opener. The blockbuster’s soulless regurgitation allows for two revelations: stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James are the real deal. Their chemistry sizzles as the background been-there-done-that action blabbers with explanation and pretend threats. Divergent is a haunting glimpse of the future: There are two more installments after this one.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014

From our Review: Director Scott Waugh’s Need for Speed follows Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul in his first post-Breaking Bad feature film), a small town street racer-mechanic struggling to make the payments on his high performance automobile repair shop after his dad’s death. When hometown boy-turned-famous racer Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) returns with both a job proposition — and Anita (Dakota Johnson), Tobey’s ex-flame — Tobey finds himself back in a rivalry that will lead to tragedy.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Sure to confuse search engines for years, this is the second game to come to Nintendo’s 3DS with the simple title of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” This one, though, is based on the new film opening in theaters this Friday (whereas the first was based on the newest cartoon version of the heroes in a half shell).

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

From our Preview: It has a few obvious influences, but more than anything else, Sacred 3 is like Warhammer: 40,000. On one side of things, you have deadly serious heroes with a strong sense of culture who are devoted to doing what’s right. The Safiri, for instance, harness the sun to power their warrior merchants. Meanwhile, the oppressed Ancarians are a group of guerilla troops who use nasty tactics to keep themselves safe. Sacred 3‘s enemies, however, are ridiculous, goofy green-skins with a hunger for violence and armor made from slapped-together garbage.

It’s a fun mix that works well with the familiar but improved-upon action-RPG gameplay, and it proves new series developer Keen Games — new to the Sacred series — has a great understanding of what makes Sacred tick.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 (PS4, PC)

Road Not Taken is a roguelike puzzle game about surviving life’s surprises. You play as a ranger adventuring through a vast, unforgiving forest in the aftermath of a brutal winter storm, rescuing children who have lost their way. Randomly generated levels deliver a limitless supply of possibilities to explore and challenges to overcome. Your actions will influence not only your own story, but that of the villagers you hope to befriend and the town you call home.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 (Vita)

From the co-creators of Sony’s blockbuster PlayStation franchise WipEout comes Table Top Racing, a fast and furious combat racing game featuring console quality graphics and gameplay.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 (Vita)

From our Preview: I think the major draw of Metrico is its simple delivery and unique mechanics. The graphics are basic, yet beautiful. Music and sound effects aren’t overdone; they fit nicely into the quiet and pensive nature of the game. And since solving puzzles is largely based on your movements – running and jumping to move things around you – there’s a geometric edge to everything you do. The numbers and charts all around the main character aren’t just there by coincidence; they fit in perfectly with Metrico’s almost math-based gameplay.

Release Date: Thursday, August 7, 2014 (Wii U)

Jett Tailfin is an underwater racing game that tells the story of a lovable fish who, accompanied by his friends, competes to win a quirky underwater competition. The game allows players a full range of control with multiple shortcuts and additional landscapes as racers attempt to find the best route to the finish line. Players have the option of challenging friends and choosing from a large variety of different types of fish to race, each mimicking true-to-life attributes of real fish.

Racers will speed through a variety of environments set up as exotic ecosystems, such as Atlantis Metropolis, Hawaiian Islands, Ship Graveyard, Pirate’s Island, and more. Sea-loving friends such as electric eels and octopuses will attempt to prevent fish from finishing each race, and are utilized by players to gain advantage over their opponents.

Heaven is a prison. Hell is a playground. Would it be your ultimate fantasy to enter the world of a video game? A realm where you don’t have to go to work or worry about your health; where you can look like a hero or a goddess; where you can fly space-ships, slay dragons, visit any period in history, any realm in fiction, yet all of it feels completely real. A realm where there are no consequences and no responsibilities, to the extent that even if you die, you can just respawn and start again.

Or would it be your worst nightmare?
