ONE PIECE Ch. 754 Review

The horrors of Toyland.
The horrors of Toyland.

There seems to be no end to the constant obstacles that keep appearing between Luffy and Doflamingo, and who could have imagined that even a 1,000 foot tall golem would be so outclassed by one man brandishing three swords?

The Good

It's always interesting to see talented artists imitate drawing poorly.

I think it's safe to assume that I'm never going to tire of Zoro playing the total bad ass. In the previous two arcs, post time skip, Zoro has lacked any real challenge to show his new strength.Hyouzou was a joke compared to him, and he was holding back against Monet. I doubt even Picais in Zoro's league, but the display of power in this chapter is nothing to scoff at. For the first time,Bartolomeo and myself are one the same page.

I feel that the reveal of the ever illusive Kanjuro deserves some particular attention after I've seen his devil fruit powers. Now, the concept of the ink painting sorcery isn't anything new to Japanese culture and media. However, I can't help but wonder if Oda went to see ROAD TO NINJA and thought of the untapped, comedic potential of the bad artist Sai actually trying to use his particular brand of jutsu. Ultimately I really like it. It fits in with Oda's style to twist your preconceptions.

The Bad

Zoro is a man among men.
Zoro is a man among men.

I'm really starting to tire of this long road to Doflamingo. Oda keeps the writing fresh enough, and I'm enjoying Luffy's commentary. That's the only thing really preventing me from getting too bored with these scenes. This has just been going on for long enough. Thankfully it looks as if next week is going to spice up that sub-plot with the appearance of those disturbing toy soldiers. Is Sugar back in this fight?

Verdict 4/5

I could almost compare this chapter to a sandwich. Some filler pressed between a goofy comedy bit and a scene of pure, machismo awesomeness. I guess in that case this would be better compared to the KFC Double Down. Seeing how the outer layers had more meat than what's found in between. Oda doesn't linger for too long on any scene, and he picked a perfect moment to close out the chapter. It completely made up for Luffy's extended road trip.
