North American Releases of New Sion Sono and Takashi Miike Films Announced

Indie films distributor XYZ Films has announced agreement with Nikkatsu that includes the North American distribution rights to Japanese auteurs Sion Sono's Tokyo Tribe (2014) and Takashi Miike's Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld (2015). Tokyo Tribe will have its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Sion Sono, who adapted manga Himizu in 2011 and made it into a story of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, returns to the medium for an adaptation of Santa Inoue's Tokyo Tribe.

The manga Tokyo Tribe 2 was serialized in Shodensha's fashion magazine boon from 1997 to 2005 as the sequel to the original Tokyo Tribe, then compiled in 12 tankobon volumes. The story of the series is set in Tokyo as a fictional town ruled by violence and crime, while featuring many hip hop and R&B tracks. A 13-episode TV anime also based on Tokyo Tribe 2 animated by Madhouse was aired on Wowow from November 2006 to February 2007.

According to Variety, prolific director Miike's (infamous manga adaptation Ichi the Killer, as well as Ace Attorney and Yatterman and MPD Psycho among other anime/manga adaptations) Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld will tell the story of “a gang boss who has become legendary for surviving knife stabs and gunshot wounds that would kill any ordinary mortal. The reason for his seeming indestructibility: The boss is a vampire. When he is finally felled by an assassin, he bites an underling, Kageyama (Hayato Ichihara), before expiring. Now a vampire himself, Kageyama goes out to seek revenge.”
