OK, OK, OK… nitpicky question, but why wasn’t Jojo able to use his Ripple
power when the entire deck of that ship is being pumped with hot steam from the engines?
Doesn’t he get his power from air? And isn't Dio vulnerable to fire and
warmth?
It’s a dumb question to ask, I know. This is an episode, after all,
that opens with Mr. Speedwagon not realizing that Jojo and his
bride were leaving to America until he read it in a newspaper article at
the very moment they were setting sail. This is a show that throws
logic over its shoulder.
Still… they make such a big deal about the Ripple’s qualities. It’s
hard not to call out the inconsistencies when they arise.
Anyway, I’ve blown a lot of hot air about what JOJO has inspired, but it’s
always funny to realize where the show itself is drawing its inspirations from.
Much like how FIST OF THE NORTH STAR was obviously the end product of
swapping Bruce Lee into MAD MAX, JOJO clearly seems to have been borne of Araki
thinking that DRACULA would’ve been a hell of a lot better if Kenshiro
played Jonathan Harker.
Given the
timing, he was probably watching the Christopher Lee or Frank Langella movies.
I can picture him squirming around, getting impatient during all the scenes of
Renfield shipping the Count’s coffin across the Black Sea, wonder why there
weren’t any kung fu fighting zombies on the ship.
And I won’t deny it - - Dio makes far more outrageous vampire than any
Dracula I’ve seen. Here we are, only nine episodes in, and it feels like we’ve
come to summit of this epic dynastic blood feud.
