In Gremmy's haste to overcome Zaraki Kenpachi, he tries to become that which he is trying to overcome. Be careful what you wish for Gremmy. You might not like what you find there.
The Good
You know, I've been rather astonished at how cerebral this battle has been between Kenpachi and Gremmy. It's not something you'd expect from Kubo. It's easy to get into another person's head. For example, try not to imagine a purple duck. You see, I just got you to think of a purple duck. The real trick is to do the same thing but in a way that's actually to your advantage. In this fight, Kenpachi has wormed his way into Gremmy's head as this insurmountable monster. In his attempt to imitate that strength, he's pushed the limits of his imagination and body.
I don't think this was an intentional move on Kenpachi's part, nor do I really think this is the end of this match-up. Still, I'm impressed with what this battle comes across saying about Kenpachi. Kubo could tell the audience how strong he can be, or take this more obscure route. In trying to become Kenpachi, Gremmy only finds self-destruction. He quite literally became his own worst enemy. I challenge anyone who claims they foresaw that outcome.
The Bad
Much as with NARUTO this week, the art at times is a bit unclear. However, it wasn't nearly as vague. Upon my first read, I wasn't sure how Kenpachi went from space to cutting Gremmy in half. It made more sense in my second time through.
I do find it a bit irritating that Kubo hasn't been explaining the abilities of the more recent zanpakuto. Although, I'm also aware how annoyed I've gotten in the past when he's had characters explain their powers to the enemy. I don't mean to damn him whether he does or not. I'd just like to understand what's going on with Kenpachi's shikai. Just saying that he can cut through anything seems a touch too simplistic.
Verdict 4/5
I'm sure this battle will go on for another round or two, but I can't help but be impressed with the outcome for this week. Gremmy's imagination started as his greatest strength, then switched into his greatest weakness. Much like with Icarus and his wings. he flew to high and was burned. I'm looking forward to seeing where things go from here in the next chapter.
Next week is Golden Week, so that means all the WSJ series are going on break. This is the only series of the Shonen Trilogy that didn't end with a cliffhanger. That should make the wait a bit easier.
