Disney Infinity 2.0 coming to Xbox One, PS4 [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] During a special presentation today, Disney reiterated that Disney Infinity has sold over 3 million $75 starter packs so far, driving $500 million in revenue. Disney also confirmed past rumors, officially announcing Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes for fall 2014.

Disney has even hired Brian Michael Bendis, a veteran Marvel Comics artist and writer, to work on the story for the new game.

New characters include Captain America, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow. Spider-Man is also coming to Disney Infinity through what Disney is calling “Disney Infinity 2.0.”

All of the toys and power discs from the original Disney Infinity will work with Disney Infinity 2.0, the company said. In addition, all of your custom-made toyboxes are compatible with the new version.

Disney Infinity 2.0 is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and iOS, Disney confirmed. Starter packs include two power discs and three characters: Thor, Black Widow, and Iron Man.

As part of Disney Infinity 2.0, the character level cap is being raised to 20. Disney is also overhauling the game’s toybox mode, making it more accessible to newcomers, the company said. In addition, Disney Infinity 2.0 virtual playsets will be much larger than those from the original game, “because our characters can fly,” Disney said.

Lastly, Disney announced that it was so impressed with the work of one community member that the company actually hired him to join developer Avalanche Software.

The original story is below.

During a special webcast today, Disney will unveil “the latest chapter” of its toys-to-life game Disney Infinity. You can watch the live broadcast right here in this post through the video above. The presentation starts at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT, though it’s not clear how long it will run.

It’s unknown what Disney might show during the event, but some options include new character packs (Star Wars or Marvel, perhaps?!) or maybe even a version of the game for new consoles like the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Whatever the announcement turns out to be, it will come just days after competitor Activision revealed its all-new Skylanders game, Skylanders: Trap Team.

Earlier this month, the official Disney fan club teased that “Disney Infinity 2.0” would launch in August 2014, but the group would later delete this message, saying it was posted in error.

Disney Infinity launched last summer across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and PC, and more than 3 million $75 starter packs have been sold to date. For more on Disney Infinity, be sure to watch the live broadcast today and also read our review of the main game.
