ONE PIECE Ch. 751 Review

As Sabo tests out his new powers while holding off the Navy, Luffy and Law are being led to a shortcut that may be too good to be true. This could be a literal dead end for our hero.

The Good

Someone give the translation team a raise.

Great opening with the fight between Fujitora and Sabo, and the action is like something out a of Michael Bay movie -- naturally I'm talking about the meteors destroying huge sections of the city. Though our time with that fight scene is short lived, we go right back to Luffy surrounded by chaos on all sides.

You know, I hadn't even thought of this until the current chapter, but what if some of the bandits and mercenaries on the island sided with Doflamingo? Loyalties of nearly everyone need to be carefully questioned. How else do you really explain what happens here at the end. Even if Kelly Funk thought this was a shortcut, how could he have thought it led to the Flower Field when it's really just a well. It was all too good to be true. This kind of environment isn't the safest place for such a trusting protagonist.

I normally don't make commentary on the chapter opening stories, but it appears that this one will be focusing on Jimbei'sreturn to the Straw Hats. That's an interesting choice. You'd think he'd just show up out of nowhere to surprise the audience. Now, we have a general idea of what he's doing and when he'll arrive. Those side-stories always move at a much slower pace. However, this one is described as "Limited".

The Bad

It seems to be a running theme this week. Let's start a chapter off with a profoundly epic battle that I'm very keen on following, then cut away suddenly to something completely different. While that very thing irritated me with BLEACH, it wasn't as bad here. At least Luffy has a reason to stop moving forward. He was fooled into a trap, and it all ends on an actual surprise ending.

Verdict 4/5

Despite being teased with some action, the transfer over to Luffy and the gang served to move the plot along. I'm really excited to know Rebecca and Robin will be in the party to bring Trafalgar the key to his cuffs. I'd love to see these two in more of a fight. It then all ends with a confrontation that I honestly didn't see coming so soon. Doflamingo is definitely in the running for most effective villain in manga history.
