Yhwach and Uryu have broken into the Reiokyu, leaving Ichigo, Chad, and Orihime reeling from their friend's betrayal.
The Good
If it wasn't for Renji and Bazz-B, this chapter might have been a complete wash for me. They were the source of some good laughs after the disappointing beginning, but we'll get to that in a moment. It's too bad these guys had to meet as enemies. I can sense the possibility of a real fashion bromance between these slaves to style. In all seriousness, Renji is one of the last people to say someone looks like a chicken. The best part of it all was Rukia's snarky commentary.
The Bad
So, when did this all become about Uryu? Last week, Ichigo looked like a heart broken teen seeing that his normally reluctant ally was on the side the Vandenreich, and he's still harping on about it in this chapter. I honestly don't get why everyone is so shocked and disappointed by these events. Uryu isn't that important of a character to begin with. When was the last time he really influenced anything outside of filler episodes?
I find it incredibly irritating that we have spent weeks upon months waiting for Ichigo to arrive from the Reiokyu after his training, and now he has to go directly back there. Don't get me wrong. We all knew this fight would drift that way eventually. I just never suspected it would be just after his arrival. This completely deflates the return of the hero moment.
Verdict 2/5
In the time the pacing should be kicking into high gear, the plot has hit a major speed bump. Thank goodness for supporting cast in times such as these. Rukia and Renji kept me just entertained enough but couldn't carry the whole thing. It pains me to rate this chapter so low, but Ichigo's sudden fixation on Uryu really dragged things down. Add on top of that the issue of the hero needing to head right back from where he started. Was it just my imagination, or did this chapter also feel shorter?
