FEATURE: Anime-Planet Recommends… Space and Beyond Edition

FEATURE: Anime-Planet Recommends… Space and Beyond Edition

Another week, another edition of “Anime-Planet Recommends…”

Pick up a chair, dodge Popee and join us for another round-up of the anime you’ve recommended watching this past week on Anime-Planet.

This past week, both the top loved/hated characters and the most popular anime (based on personal list updates) has remained constant. So for this edition we’ll focus exclusively on some of the recommendations you’ve made on Anime-Planet over the last seven days.

Recent recommendations for Spring 2014 anime

If you like this season’s Selector Infected WIXOSS, you might like Madoka, C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control, or Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters.

Madoka

For the Madoka pairing, MaraRuizu notes:

“When given the possibility to fight in order to gain one single wish, the main characters in these shows are more interested in joining the fighting itself. – Whether it is to find purpose in life or because the fights are fun. However, making a wish – miraculous or not – might be more trouble than it’s worth.

Both of these shows are rather dark fantasy stories with an overwhelmingly female cast. As such, if you like one you should check out the other.”

C

When it comes to C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control, ZetsubouKaiji has this to say:

“If you like anime about high stakes games that start off simple, but then grow to have world changing consequences then you should check out these titles. Both C and Wixoss start out with their characters just trying to have fun with these new games they’ve discovered, but thy quickly come to realize that there is a lot more at stake in these games.

In C the characters play a lot of different games and the cards are just used for avatars. Wixoss is about a card battle game so there is less variety in the game. Wixoss also does a poor job of explaining the card game so it can be difficult to understand what is going on most of the time.

Both these anime have real world and game world settings. The real world in both anime are shown as a bit drab and gray, but the game worlds are colorful places full of fantastical design. C has the better designs and more interesting look of the two, but both anime have a second world that only a few selected people can see.

If you’re looking for games anime where the stakes seem low at the start, but suddenly become world shaking then check out either of these titles. “

Yu-Gi-Oh

ZetsubouKaiji also thinks you’d like Yu-Gi-Oh for some specific reasons:

Selector Infected is Yu-gi-oh drained of all the fun, humor and a game that makes sense.

These are both card battle anime where the main character starts off as withdrawn, but through the game they start to change and make friends. Both these shows center on a new popular game that the characters start playing for fun, but soon have to play for much higher stakes.

Selector Infected has a much darker tone, tons of melodrama and the game is presented in the most confusing, non-sense manner possible. The characters are all unlikable and unsympathetic. Yu-Gi-Oh might just be dumb fun with typical shounen plots, but it at least knows how to present its game in a manner that makes it look engaging and fun to play.

If you’re thinking about watching Wixoss because you like card games in your anime then just do yourself a favor and watching a bit of Yu-gi-Oh instead. “

Moving right along, if you liked Buddy Complex, RahXephon or Evangelion, you might enjoy Captain Earth.

Captain Earth

Starting off with the Buddy Complex pairing…

Buddy Complex

manuueex writes:

“Both are mecha anime and both personally gives me the same feeling when watching them. The main character also has the same kind of personality.”

RahXephon

For the RahXephon pairing, HasseRovdjur states:

“Both Bones anime are not only similar to each other, but also similar in that they are not terribly original, but are heavily influenced by shows that came before them. That aside, they both feature a teenaged guy that needs to pilot a mecha in order to thwart a threat from aliens hellbent on taking over the world. Mysterious organizations with conflicting plans make this much harder than it should be, and in both shows there is a lot of vague hintings about what goes on under the surface.

Fans of either show should probably check the other one out.”

Evangelion

Finally, for Evangelion, Hasse suggests the pair because:

“Both Evangelion and Captain Earth focus on a young boy tasked with defending the Earth from a threat that endangers humanity. In EVA you have NERV as the organisation that is assigned to fight against the Angels, in Captain Earth it’s Globe that has to protect the Earth from an alien invasion.

Both shows have more than that in common, of course, as there is a lot of secret machinations behind the scenes and different factions all making defending Earth a bit more complicated than it needs to be…”

Have you seen or enjoyed this season’s Akuma no Riddle? If so, you might enjoy Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito.

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

Fireaxe notes:

“In both Yami to Boushi… and Akuma no Riddle you’ll find your tomboy’ish teenage girl fighting, risking her life for that special girl she vowed to protect… Obviously, both series have some very apparent yuri vibes, and while I think AnR is a better produced show, Yamibo has a much more interesting story to tell. If you happened to like one of those two, I strongly believe you would also like the other since they complement each other so well.”

Finally, if you enjoyed Kaiji, you might enjoy Ping Pong The Animation or vice versa.

Ping Pong The Animation

VivisQueen writes:

“Both Kaiji and Ping Pong merge a tournament plot concept with unusual animation. There are some notable differences that keep each unique. Ping Pong is a straight-up sports anime with a fluid, sketchy style; Kaiji is a suspense thriller about high stakes games that hinges on its deliberately ugly character designs. However, I think fans of one will appreciate that the other delivers equally brilliant, tense drama. Furthermore, the characters in each show are the kind that you enjoy getting to know as they suffer their various triumphs and traumas. Basically, if what you’re looking for is white-knuckle suspense merged with an innovative presentation style and vibrant characters, then you won’t go wrong with either of these shows.”

Recent recommendations for other anime

Hard sci fi lovers out there, if you liked either Planetes or Moonlight Mile, you might enjoy the other.

Planetes

Moonlight Mile

cunning001 describes:

“They’re both focused on relatively hard science sci-fi in the early days of humanity’s expansion into near space”

And if you’re into time travel, you might enjoy either Steins;Gate or Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo.

Steins;Gate

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo

User lilien joins many others in recommending this pair, stating:

“Both animes deal with time travel and both main characters are trying to change the past. Both shows have serious moments mixed with a little bit of comedy and romance. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo can be more shoujo oriented, while Steins;Gate ir more thriller, but if you liked one you definitely should try the other.”

Are you into medieval adventuring? If so, you might enjoy Spice and Wolf or Maoyu.

Spice and Wolf

Maoyu

ilfelixnero joins a number of other site users with this opinion:

“Both of these anime have an amazing medieval feeling, not to mention great animations, and although Holo spends some time in the nude and the Demon King has great tracts of fertile land, there is no ecchi, and instead has a well-developed plot. Plus we have Holo and the Demon King as red-haired, red-eyed deities.”

Finally, for something on the lighter side, a huge amount of people think you’d love either Special A or Kaichou wa Maid-sama if you liked the other.

Special A

Kaichou wa Maid-sama

LoliZombie recommended the pair last week, with the reason:

Both have strong but oblivious female leads with equally (if not more so) strong male leads that are madly in love with them. There are differences that is too be expected and I would rate Maid slightly above Special A. If you are looking for something cute, romantic, and fun both of these anime will serve that purpose”

See your name in lights!

As a reminder, recommendations mentioned in each of these columns are based on the weekly suggestions anime fans like you add on Anime-Planet. If you agree with any of these pairings, or if you have additional ideas on pairs that are similar and that others would like, add them on the site, and you’ll have a big chance of seeing your name in lights in this column!

Fairy Tail

Hope to see you next week!
