BLADE & SOUL #3 -- Special Review

I spent a lot of words in the previous
write-ups, crowing about Alka’s characterization, so I might as well give some space
here to the drunk cowgirl who’s chasing her...

Again, it’s refreshing to see a
familiar trope portrayed with some actual consequences to match the actions we
normally take for granted. Honestly, I feel like I’ve seen dozens of buxom
borderline-bimbos who wind up getting drunk most of the time. What sets her
apart is that the show stresses that she’s… kind of a loser? And not in
a sexy way either. == TEASER ==

We still get the easy jokes and
slapstick of the vaudeville ‘comic drunk’ character, but it all comes with
moments stressing that this gal’s actually rather pathetic and lonely. And
again, when she talks about the bounty on Alka’s head - - and frets about
her payday being cut into by this other gang of rogues
- - it really feels
like it’s being written by somebody with a real sense of money. It’s not
somebody just rattling off the vague value system of an RPG.

(And yes, again, I realize the irony of
saying that when this is actually based on an MMO).

It’s early to jump to any conclusions
but, at this point, I’d really love to use this show as an example show other
series can’t fall back on excuses when they use familiar character tropes.
There is a better way to do things.

Watch "Revenge" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.
