ONE PIECE Ch. 764 Review

Rocinante's secrets are brought to light, and what follows is quest to save the young Trafalgar's life and soul from becoming just like his brother, Doflamingo.

The Good

But what does the D stand for?
But what does the D stand for?

The chapter is full of classic personality and plot. The duo of Rocinante and Law makes for what is a story of emotional bonding, and it could also serves as a searing indictment upon the health care system of theONE PIECE world. Seeing them going from hospital after hospital. I couldn't help wonder if they'd ever come across Drum Island eventually.

The "Will of D" has been a concept filled with mystery and is more often only spoken of in whispered tones. It's apparently a big deal in this world, but it's never been clarified as to why. This chapter seems to have lifted the veil, if only slightly, on a major concept for the series.

This seems to imply that those of the name "D" are the chosen to defy the gods, if you interpret the Celestial Dragons as the "gods" of the world. They certainly behave as much. I wonder if this is Oda's interpretation of the "chosen ones" concept for ONE PIECE. Yet, there isn't a singular option out there. There are many out in the world who could change the world. Luffy's family is filled with them, and Law was revealed to be one last issue.

The Bad

I can't say I blame him.
I can't say I blame him.

Oda is sort of confusing me in his depiction of Doflamingo as a bad seed or evil incarnate, as Rocinante describes him here. Sure, he was a little punk, but I can't exactly fault him for the things he says here. It seems pretty sympathetic that even as a child he was crucified along with his father and brother by a bunch of citizens for nothing more than guilt by association. It's not as if Doflamingo tormented these people personally. Swearing to hunt and kill the people who've done that, regardless of their weak justification, seems pretty rational to me.

Unless they were separated for long periods of time in the past, I find it hard to believe that Rocinante could have become an officer in theNavy without Doflamingo catching wind of it.

Verdict 4/5

The story Oda tells here of Law and Rocinante bonding through their search for a cure may not be one of Oda's more impactful flashbacks. I still enjoy their chemistry. My favorite moment had to be in confirming that only the silent act is fake. His clumsiness is all natural. You readers were also spot on about his motives for beating on kids who wanted to join the Doflamingo Family. I'm just confused where the creator is going when it comes to Doflamingo. The events and the words don't quite line up.
