WIZARD BARRISTERS Should be A Whole Lot Weirder -- Review

This premise sounded quite lame when Matt brought it up on the Pit a while
back
. Awkwardly smooshing loud genre elements into a boring, clerical field might
as well be an anime cliché, by now; and "SORCERY + LAW" here seemed like no exception.
However, this show keeps popping up on CrunchyRoll’s list of most popular shows
- - as if by magic! - - so commenting on it nevertheless seemed in order.

Sure, my hunch proved right, but I’m not as quick to dog on WIZARD BARRISTERS, because the presentation is just that appealing. Here’s another show
this season that gets pretty far along on just the strength of the art. Designs,
colors, outfits, textures, lighting and - - lest we undervalue it
- - camera direction all make this quite enjoyable to watch, moment to
moment. Hell, it’s one of the few times where I’ve actually thought, “Wow…
the set design for the conference room in this scene is really cool
.”

However, while I wouldn’t write it off as eye-candy, I honestly can’t remember a
lot of specifics about the story as I type this. It’s as if the plot details just slid off my brain, like so much condensation on the side of witch’s
cauldron.

We’d maybe have to sacrifice our winsome lead and her cute purple pigtails
(and a lot of audience eyeballs, probably) but if I were to put on my
fantasy programming director’s hat, my note would be that the show would benefit from being more like MUSHI-SHI. Quieter. Headier. More atmosophere. I'd find it a lot more interesting if you had cabalistic weirdos trying to trap each other in the esoteric rules of their magic.

That would probably preclude flashy super-moves, sexy skirts and big ol' mech suits, though... so what do I know, anyway?

Watch, Lady Justice” and
