RECENTLY, MY SISTER IS UNUSUAL -- Just How Gross Is It?

If we’re looking at new shows that have gotten people talking, then there’s
no getting around the show that’s made so many of you lunatics uncomfortable,
is there? Indeed, in the talkbacks for our Vice Pit on this very topic, there were a lot of comments about how this is just the nadir of bad taste in anime. Maybe
I’d be more grossed out if I wasn’t going in expecting something so slimy that I’d
need to wash my hands after viewing. As is, this is probably one of the most
unintentionally funny pilots I’ve seen in a good, long while.

Don’t misunderstand me, now - - I know full well that there are plenty
of intentional attempts at humor. They… just aren’t as amusing as the portions that
so completely live up to the “pervy sex stuff” anime stereotype. Yes, I'm that far removed from this whole experience.

The show pretty much sets the tone from Scene One, when it skips over
the very basic plot hole of how this guy wouldn’t have ever met his step-sister
until breakfast one morning. Didn’t their parents date for a while before
getting hitched? Wasn’t there a wedding ceremony? Asking such questions are
akin to wondering how the plumber showed up so early in a porn. Not one part of
the set-up matters. We all know what everybody came here to see.

There’s another unintentional punch line, though… because the show
doggedly insists on not showing what everybody presumably came to see.
All
the naughty stuff is covered up with awkward locket icons and fuzzy black bars (I know you’ve seen the screengrabs already). Presumably, this means there’s a pricier
cut that’s too hot for TV. As such, this is more-or-less on the order of porn
companies sneaking Bowdlerized clips of their videos onto YouTube to lure
unsuspecting surfers into Pleasure Island.

To be fair, that’s actually a sensible pushing strategy. It’s just so amusingly…
transparent here. Why, it’s as blatant a ploy as having your
cutesy angel/spirit/thing get immediately into pleasuring herself after she
possesses her host's hot body. Pay kudos, if you must, to RECENTLY, MY SISTER IS UNUSUAL for not even bothering with foreplay as it goes about its agenda.
